Parade All-Americans that are not seniors
« on: Apr 11, 2005, 09:44:57 PM »
I thought it would be interesting to follow these girls since they have to be considered some of the top players in the nation next year.

Jacki Gemelos St. Mary's Stockton, Calif. 6’0" Junior
Tina Charles Christ the King Middle Village, N.Y. 6’4" Junior
Amber Harris North Central Indianapolis, Ind. 6’5" Junior
Epiphanny Prince Murry Bergtraum New York, N.Y. 5'9" Junior
Jayne Appel Carondelet Concord, Calif. 6'4" Junior
Ta'Shia Phillips Brebeuf Jesuit Indianapolis, Ind. 6'6" Sophomore
Elena DelleDonne Ursuline Wilmington, Del. 6’4" Freshman
Angie Bjorklund University Spokane Valley, Wash. 6'0" Sophomore

Anyone think we got a shot at either of these girls out of Indy?

Jacki Gemelos has already committed to UConn.

Here's a nice story on her.

Tina Charles -

From what I can find on the 'net, apparently she is a UConn lean.

Nice little blurb from Old Gold Free Press.

Tina Charles - Women's basketball is no longer what the girls do when the guys leave the court to hunker down on the sofa to watch the ball game on TV. Should the guys have the nerve to show up back at the court during halftime on TV, they will be in for a rude surprise. And more than likely, should they try to mix it up with girls like Tina, will likely finish watching their game from a hospital bed. I was fascinated by the level of aggression and raw power that was readily on display under the boards in virtually all the games. But none so much as that displayed by Tina Charles. Where others might throw around some elbows and hips in trying to muscle their way to the rack, Tina just exploded around and through people. She was the essence of raw, unharnessed power. Kind of like watching a severed but live power transmission line popping and sparking wildly about. But Tina's power game would not be nearly as impressive without her amazing footwork. Mix equal parts of Gene Kelly, Mikhail Barishnakov, Harry Houdini and Charles Barkley then add in about 10 megawatts and you have Tina Charles. If she could dunk, she would be the embodiment of Darryl Dawkins in a woman's body. Yield Right of Way, if you know what I mean.

Amber Harris and Ta'Shia Phillips have verbaled to Purdue. Phillips will likely be playing with Scott Co's Rebecca Gray at the Boo Williams tournament in Hampton, Virginia this weekend for "The Family" 15's age group.

Elena DelleDonne plays AAU for Fencor. They've won a couple of AAU National Championships over the last few years. Probably the top Freshman in the nation. Look for UConn to try and set their hooks.

Jayne Appel - seems to be being recruited by everyone....has 84 inch wingspan.

The rising status of Bay Area girls basketball will be exemplified next season by 6-foot-4 Jayne Appel of Carondelet High in Concord. Carondelet (28- 4) was the defending state champ in Division II but lost in the Northern California final to Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. You have to like the Cougars' chances next year, when Appel, a junior, should be even better than she is now.
Though often playing less than 20 minutes a game this season, she averaged 23 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks. She has an 84-inch wingspan and can palm a ball with either hand.

Ta'Shia Phillips - as already noted by BeeBuzz, she has also committed to Purdue.

Here's a read on her and Harris.

Angie Bjorklund

“Her basketball IQ is leaps and bounds ahead of the average high school basketball player, and she is on line with some of the (NCAA) Division I girls,” Stinson said. “And this is where her high IQ comes in. Sure, she’s tall and she’s got a really nice shot. She studies (the game). She goes home and tapes all the big-time women’s games. She asks me for game tape. How often do you get high school players to do that?”

Daggone! Somebody has been busy!

I know the two girls from Indy have verballed to Purdue, but I do hope they're laying the ground work to find a follow up for Elliott. By the time she's done here, she's going to be sorely missed, I'm sure. We need to be getting another strong presence inside to keep up the inside game we'll have for the next three years.

Elena DelleDonne, I believe, is a UCONN lean. I thought she had verballed already, but I can't find anything to that affect.

She's only a frosh.  She's a girl.  She'll change her mind 20 times over the next 2 or 3 years.   :D

I don't know how they do it. Every family just does what they need to do. But from the outside looking in, it's amazing.

So, now the list looks like this:

Jacki Gemelos St. Mary's Stockton, Calif. 6’0" Junior UCONN
Tina Charles Christ the King Middle Village, N.Y. 6’4" Junior UCONN?
Amber Harris North Central Indianapolis, Ind. 6’5" Junior Purdue
Epiphanny Prince Murry Bergtraum New York, N.Y. 5'9" Junior
Jayne Appel Carondelet Concord, Calif. 6'4" Junior
Ta'Shia Phillips Brebeuf Jesuit Indianapolis, Ind. 6'6" Sophomore Purdue
Elena DelleDonne Ursuline Wilmington, Del. 6’4" Freshman
Angie Bjorklund University Spokane Valley, Wash. 6'0" Sophomore

Purdue might be putting together a really solid class.
