Game 24: UK vs Georgia
« on: Feb 08, 2010, 01:12:03 PM »
Big rematch this week as Georgia comes to Lexington. Georgia won by a single point in overtime at Athens earlier this year. The Cats will be looking to extend it's win streak and even the score against the Bulldogs. Game is set for 7pm.
GO CATS!!!

Just watched Matthew (spare me the coach title) yelling at Grey for putting up a long 3 after just making one. As many bricks as the other players have put up tonight??????  He's an *.

Now Grey passes up two open shots...passes the ball...two turnovers.

How in the world can you be down on Coach Mitchell?  You may not like him for personal reasons, but nobody can question the job he's done this year.  Last time I checked we just won 8 straight SEC games which has NEVER been done by any Kentucky Women's coach!  It's obvious this group of young women believe in each other and believe in Coach Mitchell.  I agree he was getting on Bee pretty hard but he stayed with her tonight and she hit several big 3's down the stretch.  I hope and pray Barnhart can keep Coach Mitchell at UK for year's to come!

He sure did play Gray a lot in the 2nd half and she sure did play well. I didn't see any yelling at her, but whatever happened it seems like it turned out well for both of them. That one 3 that Gray hit was pretty much game.

I thought it was a really good game. Hated to see Georgia get so close in the 2nd half but we responded good and pulled away. Funny, cause both the Georgia and Tennessee fans seem to think we won only because of the refs. It's nice to get a little heat from the big girls.  : :2funny:

Sorry, I haven't liked Mitchell from the beginning.  And, he obviously still hasn't won me over.  I didn't watch much of the second half.  I'll just end it by saying it was nice that Grey finally got a second chance.

Fair enough. Coach certainly has people who aren't fans of his. I'll need to see more than one good year for convincing myself. But I think we're all glad to have Gray on the team and for her to hit those shots in the second half.

*If anyone recorded the game and wouldn't mind sharing, it would be greatly appreciated. I did the same thing as I do for every game, but didn't get this one.

Proud of the team. See you in Nashville.

I could be totally wrong here but I think he was upset that she hit the three and then gave up the baseline on the other end for a layup. Agree that she played a great game. What I love about this team and staff is that even when it's an off night, they are all making the adjustments to get the "W".

BeeBuzz..I recorded it and will be glad to give you a copy once I figure out how to do it.

BFever- thanks for helping me out with a copy of the game. At your convenience, could you e-mail me... j.t.gray@hotmail.com

I don't think I'm giving away secrets, but Bee was coached on being out of place on a particular offensive set. She also seems to respond well to intense coaching. So proud of all the players/coaches for making this a special season.

I'm sick and tired of hearing people that have personal baggage against Coach Mitchell complaining about single insignificant incidents within a game, especially in a game we won.  Coach Mitchell is obviously a great coach, the players are responding to him, and they're having success.  If you're going to continue your nitpicking of Coach Mitchell, let's hear the specifics of whatever your personal baggage against him is.  He's not only a great coach, but also has a great attitude, an outstanding sense of humor (just watch his TV show), and from what I've experienced, is a true old-fashioned traditional Southern gentleman in every way.  So either tell us what your problem with him is, or SHUT UP!  I thought this site was to talk about BASKETBALL!  So let's talk about the game of basketball and the TEAM as a team, instead of advancing personal agendas, and promoting individual players at the team's expense.  There is no "I" in TEAM.  EverybEverybody be io

Great win and great atmosphere last night! This is such an exciting team to watch and Coach Mitchell has done an excellant job with them.  Cna't think of another Coach I would rather have right now! This is going to be a special tournament run. I can feel it. Coach Mitchell gets the most out of all the players and he spends more time with them than we do, so I'm sure he knows how to handle each one individually.
Gray's dad said in a previous post the she responds well to intense coaching. Well she certainly did last night. She played very well and did not seem to be effected at all by coach getting on her, so we should trust he knows what he is doing. It is certainly working so far! Go Big Blue! See you in Nashville!

Couple of observations from Section E:

While I know we have had games that the execution appeared to have been better, how cool is it to not have your A+ game and hand Georgia a whooping!!!!!!!!!!!

While playing against possibly bigger, stronger(maybe, maybe not) Vic continues to play HUGE!!!!!!!!

Awesome to see Franklin get some offense rolling....the things she contributes that do not necessarily show up in the box score are always a given...Love to see her continue to become offensive minded.

Mathis is one of the smoothest, purest basketball talents we have seen in a while.....and it is only the tip of the iceberg on what we will witness the next 3 years...Need to protect her from fatigue in the coming weeks because a year in the SEC vastly harder on the body that a high school season...

Must give props to Coach Mitchell for checking his reaction to the fiasco of the Houts foul/time out towards the end of the game..Loved the yanking off of the jacket and tossing to the bench and a bit of the stomping
but rather than pitching an Andy Landers he moved straight on without making a fuss and the ladies responded by slamming the door in the Bulldogs face....gotta pick your battles and he chose wisely.

The late night drives back to Louisville are a little bit easier when your team takes care of business!

Proud of everyone and it is great to be a CAT fan.......Peace

I just don't like Mitchell...why do I have to explain it?  I think he seems arrogant.  He sometimes has no rhyme or reason to the players he plays when and how long.  There are several players I sometimes feel get too much time...but we aren't supposed to actually have conversations about basketball here...only GO BIG BLUE....everything is wonderful.  And.....it doesn't really matter....we won and I hope we keep winning.  I don't watch the games and root for UK Hoops because of Mitchell.

And, if you watch the replay....the commentators were the ones going on and on about him yelling at Bee because of the shot selection....so probably swayed my reaction.  I'm a former player who was open as soon as I walked in the gym....kind of gets me fired up when coaches complain about great shooters taking bad shots...because to me there is no bad shot if you're a great shooter :eusa_naughty:

Ok....back to lurking and reading all the conversation starter GO BIG BLUE posts.

To Webby33: if your complaint was during the game, then I'll let it go, after all we won.  Even though you disagree with who gets how much playing time, our (and Coach Mitchell's) results speak for themselves this season.  You need to explain it because we want to know.  Any shot that doesn't go in is a bad shot.  However, even if a shot doesn't go in, that doesn't mean that it didn't make sense to take it at the time.  GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good grief...let's move on.  Obviously Webby's in the minority when it comes to respecting Coach Mitchell and that's okay.  If Webby thinks he/she is a better coach than Mitchell because he/she played basketball and was a good shooter, then okay.  Probably 90% of the people reading this board play or played basketball and don't agree with everything that happens in the course of a game.  I believe the decisions Coach Mitchell makes are probably based on a little better insight than what the average fan has.  We can't see what goes on in practice.  We don't watch hours of tape and create a game plan that tries to neutralize the unique strengths each team has.  We don't have to make split second decisions in the heat of battle and have a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks questioning the decisions that were made.  I suspect if being a college basketball coach at a big time program like Kentucky was easy, most of us wouldn't be reading a message board and questioning the decisions Mitchell makes.

I tell what is great, we have a bunch of passionate fans that at the end of the day wants to see this outstanding group of talented young women be successful!

Well said. I have a bit of an understanding of what it takes having been on many different coaching staffs, thus why I have taken up for him and this staff so much.

I am so pleased the results are finally coming because I knew what they were doing was the right thing to be doing in the long run.

Louisville got it done the last four years with a "quick fix" (if you will) with Angel. I am much happier with where we are where we are building a long term program. Matthew is getting it done!

You know what I love and have loved about Coach Mitchell since he took this job?  His enthusiasm and his desire to be here at Kentucky.  He WANTED this job.  He WANTED to turn this into a top notch, nationally recognized program.  Do I always agree with or understand his decisions during games?  Not at all.  But that's why he's a college basketball coach and I work in the insurance industry. =)  I think what he's accomplished this season is nothing short of amazing.  We have a talented team, but we do not have any one player that I would call a John Wall equivalent.  Somehow, Coach Mitchell finds a way to get these ladies to maximize their potential, and they seem to like and respect him for it.  I believe also that he's grown and improved during his time here at Kentucky.  It's a win-win for all of us.  I'm sad that we only have two home games left and I am going to miss seeing Amani and Lydia take the court in their Kentucky jerseys.

Go Cats!  Beat Vandy!!!  Again. ;-)

That is a huge part of puzzle that has to be there to do what we are doing. It is something that has been missing here before he got here.

Coming from someone who would probably give little credit to Demoss and her coaching staff for the current success....It's hard for me to take that serious.

Well said Webby. I find it more than  ironic that someone who can't acknowledge that DeMoss got the program started again on the right track and finds every opportunity to belittle that contribution takes exception to anyone who comes on this board and tries to discuss and sometimes disagree if it doesn't fall within her own personal framework. The smugness and the condesending tone is a turn off. It is more than interesting that those in the national media, local media, and just about everyone else I talk to in the local community can acknowldge DeMoss' s contribution to jump starting the program(except for one on this board) and that Coach Mitchell is doing a very good job building on that foundation.

With that being said, I am also sad that there are only 2 home games left. I have enjoyed watching and cheering for this team  this year. They have been pure joy to watch and they are having fun. I too agree with the poster that said that  Coach Mitchell has grown and improved this season and that it is a win-win for us.  I will continue to be a fan of the Big Blue as I have been for decades. Go Big Blue!!!
